Why SG2 & R2 Steel Are Premium Knife Materials Built for Professionals

SG2 and R2 are two names for the same high-performance steel used in premium Japanese knives. Whether it’s labeled SG2 or R2, you’re getting a top-tier material known for incredible edge retention, durability, and sharpening ease. These knives are built for chefs who demand precision, reliability, and long-term performance in every cut.

What is SG2 Steel?

SG2 (also known as Super Gold 2) is a high-carbon, powder metallurgy steel developed by Takefu Special Steel Co. in Japan. Its unique composition makes it one of the most advanced steels in Japanese knife making:

  • Carbon: 1.25–1.45% – improves hardness and edge strength
  • Vanadium: 1.8–2.2% – boosts wear resistance
  • Chromium: 14–16% – gives it semi-stainless corrosion resistance
  • Molybdenum: 2.3–3.3% – adds strength and toughness

Thanks to its balanced structure, SG2 can be hardened to 64–65 HRC while still being easier to sharpen than many other powder steels. It delivers lasting performance without sacrificing maintainability.

R2 Steel vs. SG2 Steel

R2 and SG2 refer to the same steel. “R2” was the original term used by blacksmiths in Echizen, and over time, both names became popular in the knife world. Whether you see “SG2” or “R2,” you’re getting the same premium material.

Why Choose SG2 & R2 Knives?

  • Exceptional Edge Retention: Holds a sharp edge longer than most traditional steels.
  • Semi-Stainless for Easy Care: Resists rust better than high-carbon steel — with basic maintenance.
  • Sharpening-Friendly: Easier to sharpen than other powder steels like ZDP-189 or SRS-15.
  • Professional Performance: Perfect for chefs who rely on consistency and durability in high-volume kitchens.
